Discovering the many churches on Chiloe's Island.

Each village has its own church, all very small, simple and colorful. They are delicious and they give you serenity and peace.

26 february Quellon (CHILE)

At last I enjoy a short trek between beach and forest...
It's so great walking in the nature... breathing the peace and quietness, the smells of the trees and plants, the sounds of many animals...

It hasn't been a real trek, just a long walk but it helped to reload myself a little bit!

After the forest there is the beach, but only after crossing a swampy trail teeming with insects that have exhausted us...

Reached the sand dunes quite tired, last effort... a show that only nature can offer us...
An endless beach and the Pacific Ocean ... Roscio runs to get his feet wet... I sit on top of a dune near a bush in the shade where a dog is resting ...

In the evening we reach Quellon, which as our Lonely Planet says: does not offer anything but a convenient port from which we have just sailed southbound...

I'm writing directly from the cabin of our boat ... Roscio is already snoring ... see you tomorrow!

27 february Coyhaique (CHILE)

[Luca]: "Today I have understood why Western society is steadily losing value and mysticism, it was so clear. Nowadays man is sure he can regardless of the nature, but watching the majesty and power of scenarios like the ones we're seeing these days helps you to understand how small we are in the presence of the infinity. Today there has been an earthquake at Concepcion, about 600 km from where we are, in an instant hundreds of people have died and who knows how many thousands have lost everything. I can only say that we are grains of sand and drops of the ocean and I assure you that deserts and seas are endless; here nature imposes you respect and you feel you have to obey as if you were called to pray by this great Mother" .

Today's news of the earthquake has really shaken us. It was four o'clock in the morning when the earth shook... The consequences have been disastrous, dead and wounded everywhere ...
We have received the news by Helmut immediately after the long ferry ride; we land in the ghost town of Chaiten, a small town completely covered with ash after the eruption of the homonymous volcano, occurred two years ago ... signs denounce the disinterest of the government to rebuild this town...

Earthquakes, floods, tsunamis ... why lately nature is so angry with us?

We proceed along the legendary "Carretera Austral" while we begin to receive the first worried SMS from Italy. I thought, "What the hell, I was in Afghanistan and every time there was some attack immediately I used to run to warn my parents that I was alive ... and now, on holiday, it is happening the same?"
Meanwhile we hear that the whole North Chile is completely isolated ...

In the first village we meet, about four hours later of dirt road, we stop by local "carabeneros" for help. A friendly policeman gives us his personal computer and, via email, we inform our worried parents...

"Carretera Austral", a long dirt road that goes hundreds of kilometers along lakes, fjords, mountains and breathtaking scenery below ...
A short but intense walk gives us another natural phenomenon, this time, of a glacier, several waterfalls and streams ...

28 february Los Antiguos (ARGENTINA)

Left the "Cabaña Doña Erminia" we head along Argentinean Ruta 40 for more than eleven hours ... Distances are weird here, just think that Helmut will have to drive for three days in a row when he will leave us in Punta Arenas to go back home ...

The route has been lovely, we've driven for hours along the bed of a river, lake shores of stunning colors through fjords, which gave directly the Pacific Ocean.

The earthquake of Conception is turning into a more tragic event than what we thought...
We stop to eat something in a small village and the pictures transmitted by the Chilean news scare us even more ...

Worried, we decide to proceed despite the many SMS we receive from Italy that ask us to return home ...

After the Chile-Argentina border we prefer to stop for the night in the first village we encounter: Los Antiguos, told even by Sepulveda in his Patagonian Express.
The village is very quiet, it's Sunday, ther's nothing better than a relaxing day on Buenos Aires lake!
