Christmas Markets in Austria

Christmas is coming...

this time boasting a unique atmosphere in the world.

I want to focus on three places where this feeling is amplified and gives a sense of peace and joy to couples, families and lovers!

I'm talking about the wonderful Christmas markets, particularly those of Innsbruck, Vienna and Salzburg.

The market is located in the district of Altstadt in the historic old town, just below the famous "Golden Roof". It’s opened daily from 11:00 until 20:00. During the walk through the more than 70 stalls, I suggest you to drink a glass of hot mulled wine, just to fight the possible cold weather!
The stalls range from crafts, to sweets, to Christmas decorations, candy and other nice surprises.

If kids want something different, you can take them to the market in the Marktplatz (11:00 to 20:30), by the River Inn, where you will find some attractions for children, including the zoo and the Marionette Theater.

But before you go, try to take the new lift Hungerburgbahn (13:00 to 19:00) to reach the highest Christmas market in Innsbruck. You will enjoy great views over the city and, in the meantime, wander through the stalls full of sweets and Christmas decorations.

Upon arriving in main Square of the town, you will enjoy the huge Christmas tree, Christmas has become a symbol of the city.

From here, one of the most beautiful Christmas markets in the world takes place. (Every day from 10:00 to 22:00).

Hang around between the 150 craft stalls, gastronomic and typical products while in the air spreads the scent of roasted almonds, gingerbread, mulled wine and punch will make the atmosphere even more suggestive.

One of the most touching things is the “meet and greet” with the "real" Wiener Christkindl, where for six weeks before Christmas Eve, the Wiener Christkindl Market passes, reads and recites poems and stories for young and old, to light Christmas tree in the square.

Not far from here, near the Museum of Natural Sciences, there is the Christmas Village Maria-Theresien-Platz. Throughout the period of the Advent, there are approximately 70 stands with traditional crafts; December 27 Christmas village gives way to St Silvester village.

The Culture and Christmas Market, in the courtyard of Schönbrunn Palace, offers a romantic atmosphere after Christmas turns into a market in the New Year. Here you can find traditional manufacturing handmade, attend concerts and Christmas for the little ones can participate in an extensive program of activities in a Christmas workshop designed specifically for them.

Mozart’s city is famous for its Christmas market in Resistance Square.

This market is famous for its fine crafts typical aromatic decorations for the tree and art and traditional choirs always attract a large crowd.

To experience something different for your children or grandchildren you can take them all inside the Courtyard of Hellbrunn Castle, where children can take a ride on the sleigh pulled by reindeer! In the courtyard of the residence is set up also a beautiful crib.

On the streets of Salzburg smell of homemade cookies and the spicy aroma candles spreads between the stalls full of valuable products.

Take a romantic walk in a carriage at the foot of the Untersberg mountain, get carried away by the horses is quite an experience at any time of the year here in Salzburg, but at Christmas time, among the thousand lights of the city, everything is a bit more magical.

To experience the real "Christmas" atmosphere, I suggest the market of the Advent in the Courtyard of the Hohensalzburg Fortress, you can get there on foot or by cable car and you will enjoy a wonderful view with concert as background.
Children will enjoy making straw stars, ice flowers, angels and many other items.

There is nothing more beautiful and typical to breathe deeply this unique period. Yes, this is one of the most magical of the year, where believing in fairy tales is almost a duty.
Take the first flight and go and enjoy the real atmosphere of Christmas.
And who does not like to be a child again?
